The History and Future of the Television

The television set is a common feature to most homes now, with many people owning more than one. It is a source of information as well as entertainment, and in many cases forms the centrepiece of a living room, occupying a place previously held by the fire.

TVs have been with us since the 1920s, when simple black and white ones with tiny screens were available only to the very richest people. These have developed over the years to the flat screen televisions that we know of today, with their bright colours and surround sound capabilities.

Originally designed to receive a broadcast, the use of these swapped when companies invented recorded media which could be played through them using another device. Thus far, we have seen beta max, vhs, dvd and now BluRay.

The future of televisions looks both interesting and concerning. With new sets using developing technology, the clarity of both picture and sound has never been better, and there are some interesting strides forwards in the field of 3D televisions and even holographic sets being in the experimental stages. The danger, though, comes from the internet, where increasing numbers of people are now choosing to consume their media.

It may be, that the television will more likely than not be used as a monitor for a computer based entertainment system, with split screen usage amongst other things. It is perhaps the traditional broadcasters who stand to lose the most if this trend continues, whereas the TV designers will switch their focus.
